Project Description

World Fossil is a new company focusing on importing and selling rare and unique fossils, with a secondary purpose centered on education in geology and paleontology. Its founder, Warren Briggs, is a caver and a self proclaimed amateur paleontologist who spends his time traveling the globe to unearth fossils and rare stones.

In designing his branding and business card, I wanted to focus on the roots of the company—his love of caving—while still keeping a distinct visual reference to the fossils themselves. During our initial consult we honed in on the idea of the logo centering either on a globe element or on a highly recognizable fossil, such as an Ammonite or a Trilobite.

For the color scheme, I aimed to capture the minimalistic style of the brand as a whole while creating a distinctly bone-toned and cave-dark contrast. Lastly, I personalized a font that reads historical without crossing into unserious to complete the brand lockup.

Process

For logo design, after the initial consult, I begin with creating ten hand sketched iterations. Many designers do their initial sketches digitally or are moving toward Ai idea generation, however, I find classic paper and pencil to be the most efficient and effective way to begin the design process.

From these sketches the client selected three logos to move forward with to a more refined digital stage, allowing us to better visualize them as true logos. After selecting a final direction for the logo, I began the work of refining the image from an illustration to a fully realized logo. All process images are available below.
